Thank you so much to all the staff of VTOS for the past year. It’s been a great experience. It was October when I came to you (a month later than most) and with the help of the amazing tutors I’ve obtained my Leaving Certificate and closed a chapter of my life. Just goes to show, that sometimes you can teach us old dogs some new tricks!!
I completed my Leaving Certificate back in 1972. I was in VTOS from 2007-2010.
While there I studied the FETAC Level 5 Award in Information Technology. I was always treated like an adult in VTOS. I thoroughly enjoyed all of my time in there, but the educational trip to the Dáil was my favourite. Typing, learning how to use a computer and internet skills were what I found to be of huge benefit me in my personal and working life. I am now working as Activities Co-Ordinator in a nursing home.
Maria Power – Winner of Academic Scholarship in Carlow IT – 2011
Intermediate Certificate and Secretarial Course – a long time ago
From 2008 – 2010.
- FETAC Level 6 – Word Processing
- Information Technology
- Leaving Certificate English and Maths
I liked it all – I got to Maths and English in the Leaving something I always wanted to do. I loved the computers (most of the time) I learned so much at VTOS.
Computer Skills like word processing, publisher, book-keeping, Payroll. I learned how to do projects something I had never done and how to present them properly. PowerPoint was another. I have used all of these in many ways, they have been a great help to me.
I am studying Higher Certificate in Office Management in IT Carlow. I would not have had the confidence to attempt this if I had not been to VTOS.
Iris Agar – Winner of City & Guilds Gold Medal of Excellence – 2008
I had completed my Leaving Certificate, ECDL and Fás Level 5 courses before coming to V.T.O.S. I was in V.T.O.S. from 2005 – 2008. I completed the following courses:
- Advanced ECDL
- FETAC Level 5 Information Processing, Information Technology, eBusiness
- City & Guilds Diploma in Computer Applications.
I was delighted to be awarded a City & Guilds medal. I enjoyed the challenge in completing assignments and gained great satisfaction in passing exams. I also enjoyed the friendship with other students. I loved every minute of my time spent there. I gaining a great grounding in all computer applications. When I got a job with Veolia I was able to pass on some of these skills to my co-workers. I was made redundant due to the recession. However, I have applied to Carlow IT to do Office Management. I could never have done this but for V.T.O.S.
I completed second level education many years before going to V.T.O.S. I attended V.T.O.S. from 2007 – 2010 where I studied the following:
- FETAC Level 3 General Learning
- FETAC Level 5 Information Processing
- FETAC Level 5 Information Technology
- City & Guilds Diploma
- ECDL Advanced (3 modules)
- Digital Creator
The aspect I liked best about my time there was participating, learning and making new friends. I gained computer, communication and general learning skills while there. Now I am studying a Higher Certificate in Business Studies in Carlow IT.
I completed my Leaving Certificate Exams in the late seventies and then did a commercial course where I did typing (manual typewriter) and Pitman Shorthand, I also did a few night classes (ECDL and Sage) and back in the earlier nineties I had my first introductory course into computers (spreadsheets, database and Microsoft works). I was in VTOS from 2007-2010. I studied:
- FETAC Level 5 Information Technology and Information Processing,
- Leaving Certificate (English and Accountancy),
- ECDL Advanced (Word and Powerpoint).
I enjoyed every aspect of my time in VTOS. The tutors were very helpful and provided a great atmosphere for both learning and teamwork amongst the students. Leaving Certificate English was a great help to me as it was over 30 years since I done the leaving and it has changed a lot. I found essay writing easier because I had life experience to write about. I am currently completing a Level 6 Business Management in Colaiste Mhuire, Johnstown.
